This Jurassic Period Ammonite Fossil Statement Necklace is a conversation starter! This a perfect gift for anyone facinated by fossils.
It is hand crafted with love in Colorado, and made with an amonite fossil, copper weaving wire, copper link chain, and copper findings. The amonite is encased by an intrucate wire woven design, and hand woven bail. I fashioned this after a pattern by Valeriy Vorobev - Handmade wire jewelry. Wire wrap tutorials. • The dimensions of the amonite are aproximately 2" x 1 3/4". Including the bail, the pendant measures 3 1/4" in lenght. The antique copper chain is 26" long.
According to Zoë Hughes, "Curator of Fossil Invertebrates at the Museum, explains, 'Ammonites are extinct shelled cephalopods. All of them had a chambered shell that they used for buoyancy.' Before we understood what they were, one of the explanations for ammonites was that they were coiled-up snakes that had been turned to stone, earning them the nickname 'snakestones'. But ammonites weren't reptiles: they were ocean-dwelling molluscs, specifically cephalopods." Here is my source, if you desire to learn more. What is an ammonite? | Natural History Museum (nhm.ac.uk)
